Block Island was formed during the last ice age when the receding
glacier dumped a pile of dirt, about the geological equivalent
of a seagulls bowl movement, where present day Block Island
is. Block Island was not always an island, it was part of
the continent of North America and the nearest beach-front
property was hundreds of miles away! It was not until the
water which melted off the glacier caused the oceans to rise
that this highland became an Island.
